About
About CoastGrove
A reference for the understory ecology of British Columbia's coastal temperate rainforests.
What this site covers
CoastGrove focuses on the below-canopy ecology of the Sitka spruce–western hemlock zone along British Columbia's coastal slopes. The site documents three interconnected components of understory structure: cryptogamic (moss and lichen) ground layers, coarse woody debris dynamics including nurse logs, and the light environments created by the mixed canopy above.
Content is informational and draws on publicly available ecological research, government forest inventories, and natural history documentation. The site does not represent any institution, agency, or commercial entity.
Geographic scope
The primary geographic focus is British Columbia's coastal mainland and Vancouver Island, including the hypermaritime zones of the central and north coast. Comparable observations from southeast Alaska and the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State appear where they provide relevant context for the BC coastal condition.
The Sitka spruce–western hemlock association reaches its northern limits on the north coast of BC and its southernmost extent in northern California. On BC coastal slopes, it occupies the zone below the mountain hemlock (subalpine) transition, typically between sea level and 600–800 m elevation depending on latitude and aspect.
Content approach
Articles describe ecological structures and processes using species names, observable characteristics, and spatial relationships. Quantitative data is included only where it is derived from published sources. General statements are written without invented statistics or fabricated citations.
